OUT OF THE FIRE
(Cate Culver’s Cover Art collage)

Found objects define the
woman’s gifts
by their handy usefulness:
The butcher knife slices a rump roast,
the chopping knife minces garlic, onions and celery
the seven tined fork tosses vegetables for
salad
Her hands busy cooking
nutritious meals
For children
husband
friends.
Here the tools of the
seamstress lie broken
the bobbins and embroidery scissors,
gears and hinges from a sewing machine
Charred, rusted, bleak
reminders
That a woman lived here
in this old farm house
Where smoke still spins in the whirlwind
Even as Vulcan, god of
the firestorm
rises like a phoenix spirit
reborn
from the ashes
So we renew our hope
that your gifts were not lost,
but treasured in the hearts of those you love.
Rise up O Phoenix from
the blackened hills
lift the weight of loss from our hearts
leaving only loving memories
purified in golden tears.
